Biogas Solutions

Turning waste into resources
All human activity creates waste. However, waste can also be a valuable resource. Excess agricultural produce, fish waste, manure, wastewater sludge, household, and restaurant waste are all perfect raw materials for production of biogas.

Biogas can be upgraded to pure biomethane (Renewable Natural Gas), which can be compressed and used as a low carbon vehicle fuel (CNG, RNG, CBG). It can also be injected into the natural gas grid, providing renewable energy to both homes and businesses. Biomethane can even be liquified to bioLNG (LBG), providing low carbon fuels for the heavy transport sectors on land and at sea.

Biogas Upgrading

Wärtsilä’s Puregas CA process recovers over 99.9% of the biomethane present in raw biogas by separating CO2 from the biogas through chemical adsorption. The selective organic solvents used are so efficient that the product gas also is highly suitable for direct injection into the gas grid without any enrichments. Together with the low need for gas pre-treatment, high availability and lowest power consumption the Puregas CA process provides plant owners higher project profitability. It’s even possible to capture the CO2 from the plant for industrial or food purposes, increasing revenue further.

Our Puregas plant is used to upgrade biogas for:

  • Grid injection of renewable natural gas to the natural gas grid, providing gas to heating or industrial use
  • Compression into CBG/CNG/RNG, providing renewable gaseous vehicle fuel
  • Feeding to a liquefaction unit producing bioLNG/LBG for renewable liquid transport fuel

Biogas Liquefaction Systems

Provide solutions for biogas upgrading and liquefaction
Wärtsilä’s energy-efficient mixed refrigerant (MR) liquefaction technology is ideal for liquefaction of upgraded biogas and low-capacity natural gas liquefaction. Our fast-track engineering model, combined with the MR technology, result in low investment costs and short manufacturing time.

In our MR-based liquefier system, one single compressor and one aluminum plate-fin heat exchanger are the main components. A standard chiller is incorporated to improve energy efficiency and to ensure stable operation of the MR process.
